AS GREENLAND FACES RAPID MELTING OF ITS ICE CAP AND RISING SEA LEVELS, NEW GROUND CONDITIONS WILL EMERGE THAT WILL HAVE TO SERVE CHANGING CONSTITUENCIES. THIS PROJECT AIMS AT DEVELOPING AN ARCHITECTURE THAT WILL EVOLVE & MARK GREENLAND'S SHIFTING PHYSICAL AND GEOPOLITICAL LANDSCAPE, FOCUSING ON SITES WITH ACCELERATED GLACIAL RUNOFF AND HYDRO-ELECTRIC POTENTIAL AS PLACES OF EMERGING CHANGE AND ACCESSIBILITY.
GREENLAND MUST CONFRONT MANY EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE – INCLUDING SIGNIFICANT RECESSION OF ITS ICE SHEET, CHANGING PRECIPITATION DYNAMICS (I.E. SHIFTS IN SNOWFALL ACCUMULATION), RISING SEA LEVELS AND A LONGER GLACIAL MELT SEASON––ULTIMATELY ALTERING FUNDAMENTAL CULTURAL AND ECONOMIC CONDITIONS ACROSS THE COUNTRY. ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGES BRING TENUOUS, THOUGH POTENTIALLY CONSTRUCTIVE EFFECTS, OFFERING MORE OPPORTUNITY FOR AGRICULTURAL GROWTH, DYNAMIC FISHERIES, SAFTER SEAS AND ACCESS TO MINERAL RESOURCES. THE MANIFESTATION OF MORE ACCESSIBLE RESERVES INEVITABLY DICTATES GREATER GLOBAL INTEREST IN GREENLAND'S FUTURE, AS NEW SHIPPING ROUTES, OIL, GAS AND GOLD SITES OPEN DUE TO MELTING GLACIERS. THESE EMERGING OPPORTUNITIES COULD BRING SIGNIFICANT POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC CONFLICTS AS THE COUNTRY DECIDES HOW ITS VAST LANDSCAPE AND WATERS WILL BE USED BY CITIZENS AND THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY.
THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LAND AND WATER, SPECIFICALLY GLACIAL RUNOFF AND RISING SEA LEVELS, REVEALED THREE SITES OF INTEREST FOR THIS PROJECT: NARSARSUAQ, KANGERLUSSUAQ AND UKKUSISSAT. IN ORDER TO DEVELOP DESIGNS WITH AN UNDERSTANDING OF TIME, TWO TEMPORAL AND SEASONAL SCALES WERE ESTABLISHED SHOWING THE PRESENT AND A ONE-HUNDRED YEAR PROJECTION, AS WELL AS REFLECTING THE COUNTRY'S WINTER AND SUMMER EXTREMES. MATERIALLY SENSITIVE FORMATIONS WERE DESIGNED TO INHERENTLY SCAR AND ALTER OVER TIME, SERVING AS VISUAL MARKERS OF CHANGE. MORE IMMEDIATELY, THEY ACT AS WATER CATCHMENT INFRASTRUCTURE––BUOYING KINETIC, PROGRAMMATIC SPACES WITHIN THEIR WALLS IN ORDER TO CREATE AN ARCHITECTURE THAT CONSIDERS THE TEMPORAL MANIFESTATION OF WIND, LIGHT, TEMPERATURE AND WATER (IN ALL OF ITS FORMS) IN THE CONTEXT OF GREENLAND'S DRASTICALLY TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPE.
